TROUNCE
Domestic
violence was not new in the house of Mr. and Mrs. Mathew, but in the wee days
of their relationship her husband who was still trying to win her heart over
was clever by creating an illusion in the beginning that she was the dominant
partner, he idolized her, loved everything about her and constantly told her
she was a smart woman. He was so sweet and loving; he wanted to know everything
about her family, her childhood, hopes and dreams. He believed in her and also
created a solid trust between them. She quickly fell for him, she began dating
him, everything was rosy and perfect, she had never met anyone who cared for
her this much and was not willing to let go of something so rare and beautiful.
Their
relationship blossomed. He finally asked her to marry him in the most beautiful
way ever. She was totally swept off her feet and moved in with him. Their
engagement lasted for six months before wedding plans started kicking off, she
was excited and waited for the special day she would get married to the man she
loved with all her heart.
Two months
to their wedding, she was in the kitchen dressed in a short and simple shirt.
She was cooking dinner and at the same time had surfing the net with smart
phone. She got carried away and forgot what she was cooking. Mathew was in the
dinning reading sports magazine went he started smelling something burning. He
rushed to the kitchen and saw Tina’s eyes locked into her phone. He got angry
and rushed towards her and landed a stinging slap on her face, she looked at
him bewildered.
“what did I
do?”
“you are
asking me what you did. Do you want to burn down my house”. She got angry “was
that why you slapped me?”
“you dare
question what I do, I will teach you never to question me”. He put both of his
hands around her neck and squeezed it so tightly that she couldn’t breathe or
scream, he repeatedly hit her head on the wall and slapped her face. She freed
herself from his grip and smartly pulled out a knife from its rack and pointed
at him. He calmed her and begged her to put the knife down. He went down on his
knees begging and pleading for forgiveness and swearing the incident would
never happen again. She saw sincerity in him and pulled him up. He kissed her
so deeply and told her to get dressed that he was going to take her to dinner
instead. With pain around her neck and bruises around her shoulders she got
dressed and they went out to dinner. She felt guilty for even pointing a knife
at him. Despite what happened she still believed in a happy marriage with him,
because she loved him and he loved her so much. He promised her he was never
going to hurt her again and she held on to that and married the man of her
dreams.
Years into
the marriage he didn’t keep his promise, he kept on hitting her, and he gave a
miserable life instead of a happy ever after. She still stayed married to him
hoping he would someday change and be a better husband. Her hopes were never
met each day. She had two children for him Mia and Williams, who got really
scared of their father and watched they mother continuously been maltreated by
their father.
Mia and
Williams, ten and thirteen respectively got home from school and heard the
screams of their mother. They got into the house and saw their father following
the mother with monstrous steps and a belt in his hand. He got hold of her and
lashed her with it mercilessly, she begged and cried. The once beautiful Tina
had turned into a shadow of herself. He kicked her when he got the chance,
dragged her hair and slapped her face, her clothes were torn from struggle. He
kept on using the belt on her until the buckle of the belt hit the corner of
her left eye and started bleeding.
Mia watched
this with horror in her eyes, she started crying as Williams pulled her close
and tried to stop her from crying. She pulled away from his hold and rushed at
her father as she pulled his arm crying.
“stop
hurting my momma”. Mathew pushed her down with a severe stern look,
“don’t you
dare come between me and your mother, if you do I will kill you” he turned to
look at Tina sprawled on the floor, “you are lucky the children came”. He left
them, got into the room and locked himself there calming himself down with a
can of beer.
Mia and
William, went to their mother who was sobbing so much, to comfort her.
“mommy,
let’s leave this house” William said looking at the bruises on her body
“no, we
can’t leave, this is your home, where do you want to go to” she said through
teary eyes
“mommy daddy
keeps hitting you” Mia said in a shaken voice. Tina patted her head
“I am sorry
you saw this”.
Everyone in
the house treaded on egg shells in the house. Nobody knew the mood Mathew would
switch to at any minute. This minutes his smiling and happy, another minute he
is sober, another minute he is like an aggressive lion. Tina stayed with him
because she still loved him and believed he was just troubled and needed help.
She tried all she could to make him happy, but all her efforts were futile. He
was domineering and at the slightest provocation he flew into a flaming rage.
Mia and Williams lived in fear despite the love the mother showed them. They
dreaded coming back from school to meet their father hitting their mother.
Mathew stopped her from doing her job and turned her into a full time house
wife. All her goals and potentials were buried, she became an ordinary woman, a
woman enslaved in the hands of the man she blindly loved, a man who she thought
believed in her and her dreams. She still hoped for a change.
